Today we’re going to talk about Trailer Hitch Ball Sizes, how to know what size you need and the names of the various parts of the ball. To get the right hitch ball to meet your needs get one with a load rating equal to or exceeding the trailer’s gross trailer weight rating (GTWR).

A trailer hitch ball has 3 measurements you need to know to in addition to the GTWR:

A: Ball Diameter Inches across the hitch ball
B:  Shank Diameter – inches width of the threaded shank
C:  Shank Length – length of the full shank in inches

Trailer Hitch Balls by Diameter: These come in three sizes. 1 7/8”, 2” and 2 5/16” diameter

Trailer Hitch Balls by Shank Size: These come in a ¾”, 1” 1 ¼” and 1 ½” diameter

Trailer hitch balls are also purchased by load capacity which can range from 2,000 lbs to 30,000 lbs. It’s important to match your hitch ball to the weight class rating of your towing system. You can only tow as much as the lowest 684 Standard rated item can handle (hitch, hitch ball, drawbar, etc.).

Every hitch ball we carry is made of solid steel construction and available in a variety of sizes and finishes. All our hitch balls comply with safety specifications and requirements of VESC Regulations V-5 (Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission has defined a testing method for a hitch that is Class IV or higher. If the hitch passes the various tests it is defined as VESC Regulations V-5 compliant). You can see a huge range of trailer Hitch Balls sizes in our online store. Got a question?
